city (1990 est. pop. 85,000), S Ukraine, on the Crimean peninsula.
It is a major Black Sea port at the western end of the Feodosiya Gulf. 
Feodosiya is also a rail terminus. A popular Crimean sea and
health resort, Feodosiya has beaches, mineral springs, and mud baths. The
city occupies the site of ancient Theodosia, which was founded in the 6th
cent. BC by Greek colonists from Miletus. Theodosia, noted for its grain exports,
was destroyed by the Huns in the 
4th
cent. AD; it existed thereafter as an insignificant village until the Genoese
arrived in the 13th cent., established a flourishing trade colony, and virtually
monopolized Black Sea commerce. Under their rule, the city was called Caffa
or Kaffa and served as the chief port and administrative center of Genoese
possessions along the Black Sea coast. The khan of Crimea, an ally of the
Turks, conquered the city in 1475; it remained under Turko-Tatar control until
Russia's annexation of the Crimea in 1783. In 1802 it was named Feodosiya.
German forces captured it twice during World War II. The ruins of the Genoese
fortifications still stand.
There are many sights in Feodosia.
It is 25 centuries old.One can visit
the Aivazovsky's Picture Gallery, Grin's Museum, Mufti-Dzhami Mosque, the
Armenian Church of St.Serius. Now the Church is rised as a lapidary section
of the Feodosia Museum of Local Lore. In Primorsky Park there are the Aivazovsky
Fountain and the Constantine Tower.
Genoese and Armenian monuments are preserved in the southern part of the city: Crisco and Clement VI towers, Stephan and George Churches.The Panti Tsar Mithridates IV Evpator built the Fleet here.The Golden Horde Khan Dzhenibek became so-called here. In 1347 he threw the besiege city with corpes of his soldiers died of plague.Genoese run to Europe and became the cause of epidemic which 75 million lives took away.Here the legendary Ukrainian Rocsolana was sold down the Turkey sultan who became one of the famous women in the history. In 1990 deltagliding Museum was opened here. Unspeakable landscapes and the glory history of city attract artists and writers here.
